Cooking & hallway smells

Cooking smell is stuck in the couch and curtains

Easy · About 30 minutes

Where I am
The sofa smells like last night's onions.
Where I want to be
Soft things that smell neutral.
What's in the way
Fabric and cushions soak up smell from the air.

Try this first, free: Open a window and let the room air out for an hour, then give the couch and curtains a good shake.

The fix

  1. Sprinkle baking soda on the couch, let it sit for an hour, then vacuum it up.
  2. Wash curtain panels and covers that are machine safe, and hang the rest outside.
  3. Spray a fabric odor spray lightly and let it dry.
  4. Keep a carbon-filter purifier running in the room while you air things out.

What this won't fully fix: Airing and washing help a lot. If the smell comes back every time you cook, the real fix is moving the smell outside when it's made.
