Problem Overflow

Smoke, smells and damp getting into your apartment, and how renters stop them.

Other smells & stale air

A stuffy apartment with no cross breeze

Easy · About 20 minutes

Where I am
The air feels thick and the smells stay put.
Where I want to be
Fresh air moving through.
What's in the way
Only one side of the home has windows, so nothing pulls air through.

Try this first, free: Open one window on each side of the home for ten minutes. That alone changes the air.

The fix

  1. Open a window on the shady side, and put a fan in it blowing out.
  2. Open another window or the front door a crack on the other side so fresh air comes in.
  3. Keep it going ten minutes at a time, a few times a day.
  4. Close the windows before a smoky or smelly time of day outside.

What this won't fully fix: A fan moves air around, but it can't clean it. If the smell comes from outside, opening the windows won't help.

Moving out: Take the fan out and wipe the sill. There is nothing to undo.
