Cigarette smoke comes in under your front door
- Where I am
- The hallway smoke slides under the door and into the living room.
- Where I want to be
- A front door that seals when it's shut.
- What's in the way
- The gap at the bottom and sides lets hallway air walk right in.
Try this first, free: Roll a towel along the bottom of the door at night. If the smell drops, the door gap is your route.
The fix
- Close the door and look for daylight along the bottom and sides. Light means air.
- Stick a door sweep to the bottom of the door. Check the door still opens freely over your floor.
- Press removable foam weatherstrip along the frame sides and top. Clean and dry the frame first so it grips.
- Keep the towel or a fabric draft stopper there for the days the sweep isn't enough.
What this won't fully fix: A sweep and weatherstrip close the visible gaps, but a little smoke can still come through the keyhole, the lock and the wall. It lowers the smell, it doesn't erase it.
Moving out: Peel the sweep and strips off slowly, then rub away any sticky bits with a little dish soap. Check with your landlord before you add anything to the door.
