Smoke, smells and damp getting into your apartment, and how renters stop them.

Smoke from next door

A neighbor's weed smell drifts into your place

Easy · About 30 minutes

Where I am
A skunky smell hangs in the hallway or your living room.
Where I want to be
A home that smells like yours.
What's in the way
It's a strong smell that slips through the same gaps as cigarette smoke.

Landlord's job? Report it in writing with dates, and keep a log. Who fixes what depends on your lease and where you live.

Try this first, free: Do the toilet-paper test along the door edge, outlets and baseboards. Weed smoke uses the same routes as other smoke.

The fix

  1. Seal the door edge and bottom with a sweep and weatherstrip.
  2. Put foam gaskets behind outlet plates on the shared wall, with the breaker off first.
  3. Run a carbon-filter air purifier in the room where the smell is worst. Keep its sides clear of furniture.
  4. Wash the bedding and curtains that picked up the smell.

What this won't fully fix: Sealing and carbon filters cut the smell a lot, but a strong or constant source can still show up. Only the source stopping fixes that.

Moving out: Unplug the purifier and take it with you. Peel off the sweep and strips and wipe the door clean.
